Some of you have heard, and many have not, the last 2 years have been eventful (one could say the last 6 years since it all started way back then!) Being Diabetic, I am prone to "Charcot" (Shar-co) Joints. This is where the Brain, which runs and controls every function of the human body via the nervous system, fails to realize that the bones of the foot are necessary! So, it starts to dissolve them and make them very loose.
I first twisted my ankle when the first episode started and this broke my foot - 8 screws and 2 pins later I told to stay off my foot for 6 months! This continued to happen several times keeping me in cast, special boots and off my foot for the better half of the last 6 years.
May 20th of 2009 (my 21 Wedding Anniversary) I decided to have a stroke! While I have for the most part recovered from that my foot has continued to give me trouble. A surgical pin broke and migrated out the side of my foot, and then the other decided to start moving causing another Charcot Joint and massive swelling of my right foot and leg (below the knee). The pain was so intense that working became impossible. I had to stop practicing completely.
Consulting with the finest Podiatrist in UT, Dr. Gary Clark DPM, we concurred that amputation was the next step. What a blessing!
Three weeks ago (as of this writing), on Aug, 25th of 2010, Dr. Robert Nakken, M.D. surgically removed my right leg below the knee. He did a fantastic job, and after a day in the hospital I went to Kolob Rehabilitation Center for rehabilitation. What a GREAT place! I was a CNA, & Psych Nurse 30+ years ago, and I worked in just such an environment - Kolob Rehabilitation Center is the finest I have ever seen!
I am BETTER than OK!, I am getting my life back! With a little luck, in few weeks I will get a prosthetic (artificial foot) and I will start the process of getting use to that, then I will be able to take walks with my wife again, play with my grandson Lucas and stand up to my son Blake who is now taller then me!
That is a tough question - you see Chiropractic has changed in the last 40 years to try and make medical doctors out of us Chiropractors - we are not Medical Doctors, Physical Therapist, Dentists or anything else - We are Chiropractors!
I will be posting articles in the VERY near future (among other things) on this website - I hope you will return often! and see what is happening - I PROMISE it will be amazing!
HINT: Chiropractic should not cost you an arm & a leg to get the maximum benefit from it -
I, RUSSEL A. SMITH, D.C. QN, HERE BY RESOLVE TO CHANGE THAT!
(After all - look what it cost me - a leg!) And I promise not to give you a "twist" (play the very short little video below).
E-Mail me to Attend a short Introduction as to what is to come...
